Laredo Cultural District’s visit with Gary Gibbs of the Texas Commission on the Arts

by Jorge Santana

Representatives of the downtown non-profit arts partners of the Laredo Cultural District shared a recent afternoon with Gary Gibbs of the Texas Commission on the Arts. From the garden of Casa Ortiz we took in a beautiful view of Mexico. On a walk to San Augustin Plaza, we saw artist Allan Gindic actively creating the monarch highway mural on Casa Raul’s façade. From there we walked to Gil Rocha’s Convent Avenue installation of Casa de Cambios where César Casso let us in to the conceptual kitchen that served up culture and memories, and then onto the adjacent art-filled storefront windows that Sanjay Rupani has allowed local artists to show their work. We then walked to the nearby Laredo Center for the Arts and into the time capsule of Cervantes’ Don Quixote and intaglio print exhibition. We topped off a great afternoon with meaningful conversation and cafecito at Café La Oficina. Thank you, Mr. Gibbs for meeting with us and many thanks to the Texas Commission on the Arts for embracing what we continue to create. (Jorge Santana)
