There was much to contemplate at the opening reception for Josephine Sacabo’s September homecoming retrospective in the TAMIU Fine and Performing Arts Gallery.
There was the presence of Josephine and the gift of taking in the deep, rich beauty of her work; the many who attended, including some of her childhood friends and family members; the gracious closing of her comments in the gallery — that of her exhibitions in Mexico, Europe, and the United States, this one in her hometown was most meaningful.
By happenstance I had earlier in the evening witnessed the incredible moment in which she and Jorge Santana, having been only minutes before introduced to one another, recited from memory, face to face, hand in hand, the sonnet of poet Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-1695), “Detente, sombra de mi bien esquivo.”
