Every Thursday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., artists, musicians, activists, photographers, designers, and curious newcomers gather at the Laredo Center for the Arts for an event known simply as Third Space. This weekly gathering has become a living, evolving platform for creativity, collaboration, and community engagement.
Rather than following a strict theme, curriculum, or set of regulations, Third Space intentionally remains open-ended with new possibilities shaped by the interests, talents, and energy of those who show up. The result is a constantly changing series of art-centered experiences fueled by the creativity of the Laredo community.
One of the defining qualities of Third Space is its commitment to accessibility. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience level. Professional artists work alongside beginners. Experienced creatives share techniques, supplies, and knowledge with those just beginning their artistic journey. This spirit of generosity transforms the gathering into more than an event as it becomes a community of learning and mutual support.
The variety of activities of Third Space reflects the diverse talents of Laredo’s creative community. Some evenings include artist headshot opportunities, in which local photographers volunteer their time, equipment, and expertise. Participants receive professional portraits while photographers experiment with lighting techniques and collaborate with fellow artists. These sessions often result in valuable networking opportunities and new creative partnerships.
Other nights feature life drawing sessions with a unique twist. Local clothing designers create elaborate costumes for models, transforming traditional figure drawing into a multidisciplinary collaboration between fashion and visual art. These events encourage artists to study form, texture, and design while celebrating the work of local creators.
Music plays an important role in the Third Space experience. Past gatherings have included performances by the V+ trio and other musicians, creating an atmosphere in which visual art and live performance intersect. These concerts provide accessible cultural experiences while showcasing local talent.
Beyond artistic expression, Third Space regularly creates opportunities for civic engagement and political activism, offering a platform for discussion, awareness, and community organizing, encouraging participants to use creativity as a tool for social change. By connecting art with activism, Third Space demonstrates how creative communities contribute to meaningful conversations about the issues affecting the city.
Unpredictability is an aspect of Third Space. There is no fixed formula for what the next Thursday might bring. The event evolves with its participants, making every gathering a unique reflection of the community itself. New ideas emerge organically and give artists the freedom to experiment without fear of judgment or restriction.
In a world increasingly defined by schedules, expectations, and boundaries, Third Space offers a rare place in which creativity flourishes freely. Collaboration, experimentation, and community support cultivate an environment where art belongs to everyone and where every Thursday presents a new opportunity to create something together.
