The inaugural Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Borderlands Photography Show opens with a reception Wednesday, February 19 from 5 – 7 p.m. at TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Gallery.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. The show will remain on exhibit through Friday, March 28 in the CFPA Gallery.
Themed Seasonal Narratives, the show host and organizer is TAMIU instructional associate professor and longtime photojournalist T. Rob Brown. It was judged by Laredo native and professional Austin photographer Hector Hernández.
Brown shared the significance of the show’s theme.
“Our theme of Seasonal Narratives underscores how seasons allow us to change and refocus our vision of the world around us. Weather and time of year tell us a lot about our past and present. Seasons and their lighting create moods that add to the visual feel of those images. They can remind us of the stories of our youth or even reveal our hopes for the future,” Brown explained.
The Borderlands Photography Show began accepting no-fee submissions last Fall semester from Texas photographers ages 18 and up. Submissions, up to three works from each participating photographer, could include posed, still art, digitally manipulated, mixed media, or candid documentary work, including photojournalism. No A.I.-generated submissions were accepted.
An artist’s statement was required with the name of the artist, location of the artist, information about the creation of the work (film, silver gelatin print, digital, digital manipulation, mixed media, technical camera settings, etc.), date or year of creation, how it fits into the theme of the show, and a selling price if for sale in the Gallery.
Five photographers will be featured, including David Cepeda, Elkin Cortez (’22), Monse Guajardo, Richard Poe, and Oscar López.
